PRESS RELEASE - Parish Highway Improvement Plan Update January 2026

Published: 21 January 2026

New Romney Town Council would like to take this opportunity to update its residents on actions being taken in the Parish Highway Improvement Plan and to share the good news of the upcoming installation of the new reduced 20mph speed limits to be implemented in Zones 1 and 2. Following a number of public consultations and after a lengthy process New Romney Town Council is delighted to announce that the scheme is due to be completed in Spring 2026.

The cost of the Scheme was £36,293.07; Kent County Council contributed £6,293.07 and the remaining funding was obtained through the receipt of C.I.L (Community infrastructure Levy) money from Folkestone and Hythe District Council.

On the 29th November 2025, a well-attended Public Engagement event was held to discuss the remaining zones 3 to 6 and on the 14th January 2026 Kent County Council bid for funding to support New Romney Town Council through the next stages of the PHIP. The Town Council is now awaiting further information regarding any potential funding to be awarded.

The Town Council held a public consultation in March 2025 for the Kent County Council proposed Double Yellow Lines scheme on the St Mary’s Road and Fairfield Road Junction; this scheme was approved in August 2025 and completed on the 18th December 2025.

New Romney Town Council would like to thank all those who contributed to the development of New Romney’s Parish Highway Improvement Plan with comments or suggestions and continued support to the Town. Your feedback has been invaluable and together we will make our local Highways safer.

Updates to the Highway Improvement Plan will be uploaded to the Town Council website to keep all informed and up to date on any progress.
