At the New Romney Annual Town Council meeting, on 5th May 2021, Councillor Paul Thomas was duly re-elected as Chairman of New Romney Town Council, and Town Mayor, a position that he has held since 2018.

Councillor Pip Metcalfe was also re-elected as Deputy Chair and Deputy Town Mayor.

Commenting on his appointment, Councillor Thomas said:

“I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for electing me to the office of Mayor of New Romney for the third consecutive year. This coincides with the return of the Speakership of the Cinque Ports to New Romney in 2021/22, a role that I will formally take over from the Mayor of Rye in a few weeks’ time. I am immensely proud to represent and promote New Romney across Kent during the coming year. With my wife Janet as my Mayoress and with Sergio as my canine consort, we look forward to carrying on with the public duties that were curtailed last year due to the Covid crisis.

We are still considering which charities to support this year and will make an announcement shortly.

I would like to thank the Council officers and staff for their hard work in the last year. They have been both innovative and flexible in their approach to provide Council services to the Community and to the Councillors of New Romney Town Council.

We have a number of exciting projects to move forward this year, including the Community Hall & Sports Pavilion, which have been slowed due to the Covid crisis.

Finally, I would like to thank my fellow Councillors, District Councillors and County Councillor for their support in the last year, recognising that we have some work to do to in the community during the post-pandemic period.”
