Published: 17 September 2021
New Romney Speaker’s Day commemoration will take
place on Saturday 2nd October 2021. A ceremonial procession of the Cinque Ports Confederation Members will take place, led by Admiral of the Fleet the Lord Boyce KG GCB OBE DL, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Constable of Dover Castle, and the incumbent Speaker of the Cinque Ports, The Right Worshipful the Mayor of New Romney, Councillor Paul Thomas, and a community Church Service will follow at St. Nicholas Church.
The outward procession, led by a pipe band, will set off at 10.30am from the Marsh Academy; it will then head up Station Road to the A259 and turn left into New Romney High Street. The procession will travel along the High Street, turn left into Church Approach and then travel along Church Approach, crossing Church Road to enter the Church. The church service will then commence at 11.00am.
At approximately 12.40pm, following the Church Service, which local residents are very welcome to attend, the return procession will set off from the Church, again led by the pipe band, and travel along Church Road; it will then turn right into Station Road and cross over the road at the pedestrian crossing, concluding at the Marsh Academy.
A rolling road closure will be in place at these times, managed on behalf of New Romney Town Council by Walker Highways. The road, at any location along the procession route, is not expected to remain closed for longer than 15 minutes whilst the procession passes through.
New Romney Town Council thanks you for your patience during these periods and hopes that you will enjoy the spectacle of this historic commemoration.
