Kent Fraud Alert System have sent through the following information:

Fraudsters impersonating Police Officers

Following on from last week I would like to repeat our alert about fraudsters impersonating London based Police Officers and trying to persuade people to hand over their bank cards.

The fraudsters have been stating that they want victims to assist with an investigation as offenders have been arrested in possession of bank cards in their name. They will tell the victim that a courier will be sent to collect their credit card(s) so that these can be safeguarded.

Any calls like this are a SCAM. Police will never call you asking you to hand over your cards or to withdraw cash for them to collect for safe keeping. If you get a call like this, then disconnect the call. If you’re ever unsure if a caller is genuine, remember the principle of ABC and Never Assume or Believe a caller is genuine and confirm by calling them back on a trusted number. Never ring them on a number that they have provided. Try to use a different phone to the one you have been rung on as fraudsters can remain on the line, even if you think they have been disconnected. If you have no alternative phone to hand, then wait 5 -10 minutes and then ring the number of a family member or friend to confirm the line has been cleared.

If you think that you may have been a victim of this type of scam, then contact your Bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or calling 0300 123 2040.

Rogue Traders.
What are they?

Rogue traders may use illegal pressure selling tactics to sell products or services, often on the doorstep, ignoring your legal rights.

How to protect yourself –
• Ask for identification and call their company yourself (not on a number they provide) to check they are genuine.
• Ask the visitor to return another time when someone can be with you.
• Get three written quotes.
• Ask family and friends for recommendations.
• Agree payment arrangements and start and finish dates in writing beforehand, and never pay in full until you’re completely satisfied with the work.
• If the price is too good to be true, then it probably is.
• Never feel pressurised and always remain in control.

We have also attached one of our leaflets that you can keep and share with family and friends on this type of fraud.

If you think that you may have been a victim of this type of scam, then contact your Bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or calling 0300 123 2040.
