International Men's Day November 19th. New Romney Celebrates
Published: 05 December 2022
Mayor of New Romney, Paul Thomas hosted the first ever local celebration of International Men’s Day at the Curry Lounge in New Romney. He was joined by Philip Martin, Chairman of Folkestone and Hythe District Council and several other local Mayors for the event. Launched in 1999, and now celebrated in more than 90 countries worldwide, International Men’s Day is going from strength to strength.
International Men’s Day celebrates positive male role models and the loving strength that men bring to their families, and communities. The three core themes for International Men’s Day in the UK are: Making a positive difference to the wellbeing of men and boys; Raising awareness and funds for charities supporting men and boys well being and Promoting a positive conversation about men, manhood and masculinity.
After the serious business – the delicious curries and accompaniments – a raffle was held in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, which raised £200. Mayor, Paul Thomas highlighted the need for men to take care of their health – often with Prostate Cancer there is no indication anything is wrong – so a PSA blood test is essential for those aged over 50 – it could save your life. He urged men in this age bracket to get in touch with their local health providers and make that essential check – an early diagnosis could save your life.
Meanwhile the ‘Girls’ were partying, laughing and chatting at the other end of the High St in the Diamond BBQ Restaurant. A great evening - good venue, good food, good catch up - what's not to like! Local celebrities, friends and Mayors from across Kent joined Mayoress of New Romney Janet Thomas, for a night of partying – all in aid of a good cause. The ‘Girls’ raffle was in aid of ‘Target Ovarian Cancer’ and raising awareness. It is vital to know your body – the sooner ovarian cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat, so it is important to recognise the symptoms:- persistent bloating; changes in appetite; abdominal pain and urinary changes – again an early diagnosis can save lives. An added bonus - a healthy £300 was raised for this great charity.
We would like to thank the staff at both restaurants for providing great venues, delicious meals and fabulous service. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported a very successful fund raising evening.
