Stars of New Romney - Thank you!

Our Covid Journey
HUGE, HUGE thank you to New Romney, the little town with the BIG HEART. You are now the proud owners of an amazing Covid Community Artwork.
This time last year the artwork was a Dream. The idea developed, as we wanted to create an installation to commemorate and celebrate New Romney and its people during the pandemic. The first part of the project was the Rainbow Bench in the Old School Gardens. The community artwork was a little more challenging – then Claire came onboard. The ideas gained momentum – we wanted to design a piece that had community involvement – the Stars were born, the shape chosen, as Stars are a symbol of celebration, bright light, hope and joy. It became an evolving living history project and we are so proud of everyone who has contributed. There are over 400 stars displayed and the project spread across Romney Marsh and other parts of Kent .
It has taken a year to produce - the finished work looks fantastic – every star tells a story: memories; a personal journey; expression of feelings and emotions; lifestyle changes; a tribute and memorial to those who we have loved, lost and remember with great affection. The way the Stars are displayed is the way they have fallen into place, very much reflecting the way Covid affected our Community. You have completely captured the highs, lows, agony and ecstasy of the last two years in this major community artwork.
It took a Team to realise the dream. Thank you to our Creative Director Claire; Daren who made the frames; Darren from the Trophy Shop who organised the plaque; Rev’d Chris, Churchwarden Anne and most importantly everyone who has created a Star – your creativity has been both amazing, overwhelming and inspirational.
The Community Artwork was officially dedicated on Sunday 4th December at St Nicholas Church, during the Toy Service at 11am. The artwork begins its public display in The Lady Chapel and will be housed there over the Christmas period. It is intended to display the artwork across our local area and it can be loaned to local community groups and organisations for an agreed period by contacting Janet 01797 363657.
During the service Toys were donated to the local Toy Appeal as part of a Community initiative to brighten the Christmas season for local youngsters.
HUGE THANK YOU NEW ROMNEY & EVERYONE WHO HAS TAKEN PART, YOU ARE ALL STARS! Paul & Janet Thomas Mayor & Mayoress of New Romney
