Meet the Mayor...

Ahead of the New Romney Town Council Civic Service, this coming Sunday, 9th July, when both the new town Mayor and the new Council dedicate themselves to the service of the town of New Romney, here is a few facts about your new Right Worshipful Mayor of New Romney…

Cllr John Rivers is a retired Headteacher and has lived in New Romney for just over 6 years, although he has regularly visited since 1973. He is no stranger to the Romney Marsh area. John is married to Anita and between them they have 6 children, and 8 grandchildren.

John has been associated with local government since 1990, as a city, village and now New Romney town councillor. He has a lot of experience and knowledge in this sector and is also the President of the Kent Association of Local Councils.

John has a particular interest in communities, their health and welfare, and development of facilities, and has been an active member of the town council for over 5 years. He has been on the Finance & General Purposes Committee, Personnel, and the Planning Committee, as well as prominent in the formation of the new Health & Wellbeing Committee, in addition to regular full council meetings. John was Deputy Mayor of New Romney last year.

John is looking forward to being the Mayor of New Romney, to support the community moving forward and to champion the good work that is being carried out by its residents. He hopes to meet many of you throughout this Civic Year.
