New Romney Annual Town Meeting 2024 and presentations

At last night’ Annual Town Meeting members of the community gathered to celebrate achievements in the Town, to raise any concerns, and to hear reports from the Town, District and County Councillors. Short presentations were given by 3 enthusiastic guest speakers, which were well received. Pam Mellor gave an informative talk on a children’s bereavement charity ‘Holding On, Letting Go’. Kevin Clark, an independent metal detectorist, talked about and showed finds from a local Town Council owned site that he has been investigating. Liz Taylor, CEO of the Romney Marsh Community Hub elaborated on the Dial-A-Ride Scheme that is being set up.
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of New Romney, Cllr John Rivers, presented cheques to his chosen charities for the year, ‘Romney Marsh Counselling Service’ and ‘Touched By Cancer’. The monies had been raised through events that he had held during his year of office, such as the International Women’s Day dinner, Behind the Scenes Tours of Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railways, an Afternoon Tea, and through donations.
The evening was completed with presentation of Pride of New Romney Awards. The Community Nominated Award for Individual Service to the Town by a Young Person was presented to Scout Miss Nicole Baker for her work with the 1st New Romney Beavers. The CARM Bridge Meeting Point Volunteers received the award for Service to the Town by a Community Group or Organisation, and Ms Caroline Wire was presented with the award for Individual Service to the Town, for the pivotal part that she plays with the ‘New Romney Country Fayre’ and ‘Light Up New Romney’. The Mayor presented his Pride of New Romney ‘Mayoral Star’ award to Mr Derek Ruby for his work setting up the New Romney Am Dram Youth Group.
