Last week, the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Sir George Zambellas, hosted the Town Mayors and representatives from each of the fourteen coastal towns that form the Confederation of Cinque Ports, at Walmer Castle, to meet the King on his first visit to Kent since his Coronation. The Right Worshipful Mayor of New Romney, Cllr John Rivers and Mayoress Mrs Anita Rivers, and the Town Clerk of New Romney, Mrs Catherine Newcombe were honoured to be presented to the King, along with 3 representatives from the New Romney community. The Town had been asked to nominate 2 worthy causes: Paul Alford represented Litter Picking Watch Romney Marsh, and Ann Bidwell the Old School Trust. Patricia Alston of Romney Tweed had been invited by the Lord Warden to present a gift to His Majesty - a spectacle case made of tweed from sheep on the Romney Marshes.
