New Romney Shares in the Celebration of the Commonwealth

Published: 11 March 2026

On Monday the community of New Romney and the surrounding area came together to share in a ceremony in St Nicholas Church, New Romney, to celebrate the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Ceremony, hosted by the Right Worshipful the Mayor of New Romney Councillor John Rivers and Rev Chris Hodgkins, vicar of St Nicholas Church, was attended by Mrs Tracy Luke MBE DL and the Right Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover and Canterbury, along with local Mayors, dignitaries, representatives from local organisations, cadet forces, and pupils and staff from St Nicholas Primary School and the Marsh Academy. It was a celebration and affirmation of the Commonwealth, and focussed on this year's theme of 'Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth'.

Music was provided by Hythe Town Concert Band, who played a vibrant rendition of the Commonwealth Anthem as the Flag was presented by local young people and representatives of the Royal British Legion.

Thanks go to all those who attended, and especially to those who took part to make it another memorable town event.
