It's Coming Along!

Some of you may have noticed that the work on the new Maude Community Centre, in Station Road, New Romney, is progressing at a good rate, with the building shapes now being very evident above the hoardings.
At the end of October, a group of Councillors and Town Council staff were given the opportunity to have a visit to the site. They were able to see, first hand, the progress being made, and the potential of the new buildings. One member of the group was heard to comment that it was like a tardis! The annex already had the green roof installed, with its sedum plants, and the building is weather tight. Once the roof of the main Community Hall has been completed then the first fix and external insulation and brick cladding will be commenced for the annex. This building will not only house the tenant nursery but will also provide several smaller spaces for hiring out during certain times.
The main building is 2 stories, with the ground floor becoming the new home to the New Romney football and cricket clubs. The large changing rooms and referee rooms are taking shape, with the channels and framing for the showers being fitted while we were there. With the club room and players doors opening onto the sports field, it promises to be a pleasant place to watch the matches from, as well as to enjoy the social side of the club.
Beside the main, wide staircase that is accessed through a completely separate main entrance, the group saw the area where the lift is to be installed, which will take the hall users up to the first floor, where the main large and airy function room with Juliette balcony is situated. The group were able to see where the bar/kitchen area is to be installed and the Community Hall upstairs space, which will be available for occasional and regular hire, to local residents and community organisations.
It was exciting to see the progress that has been made, so far, and to be able to visualise the opportunities that lie ahead for this smart new community resource.
So, if you are part of a group or organisation, or just know that you have a party or event coming up from summer next year onwards, do bear this exciting new building in mind.
